POWDER COATING FAQs

- 01
Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. Unlike conventional liquid paint which is delivered via an evaporating solvent, powder coating is typically applied electrostatically and then cured under heat or with ultraviolet light.
- 02
Powder coated products simply looks better. It’s more durable than liquid paint, more chip resistant, has superior adhesion, is less expensive than liquid paint of comparable performance, environmentally friendly, chemically resistant, and ready to use as soon as a part has cooled down.
- 03
Powder coating may last up to 20 years, depending on the conditions in which the coated item operates. Consistent use, frequent exposure to ultraviolet light, and constantly being in an outdoor setting might make the coating break down faster. Different types of coatings have various lifespans.
- 04
Any electrically conductive metal or material that can withstand 400° F temperature without losing its integrity.
- 05
Yes you can usually overcoat components once, sometimes twice, depending on the condition of the original coating. Some strong colours can bleed when overcoated with a lighter colour – for example if you were to overcoat red with white the final colour is usually pink.
- 06
As well as providing robust protection for parts and surfaces, powder coating makes them look good too. Rather than choosing to patch up scratched metal surfaces with paint, applying a powder coating over the whole part will give it an even finish. As an alternative to liquid paint, powder coating is fast and effective and can offer years of protection. It’s the perfect way to revive scratched surfaces and leave them looking as good as new.
- 07
Powder coating can help metal resist corrosion. As a tough, durable finish, powder coating protects metal surfaces, parts and products from the effects of corrosion. It is resistant to cracking, chipping, peeling and abrasion and offers protection from UV ray damage, water and severe weather. It adheres well to metal, giving it a protective outer shell and providing an even coverage to sharp edges and corners as well as flat surfaces. While powder coating cannot protect surfaces that already have rust, it will prevent rust from building up if it is properly applied and maintained.
- 08
Most powder coatings can be pigmented to match nearly any color needed.
- 09
Our turnaround time varies on the current workload in the shop. Most single color jobs can be completed in 1 to 2 weeks, more complicated camo patterns and theme jobs average around 2 to 4 weeks. Also keep in mind that you send a weapon completely disassembled (not field strip for cleaning, but completely disassembled) this can speed up the turn around time and save you the disassembly/reassembly charge.

Powder coatings are all durable and resilient in indoor settings, and generally, only epoxy- and vinyl-based coatings don't perform as well with UV exposure, though special formulations can improve this.

Currently we are limited on oven size, we have not got the 20 foot oven installed yet. We are limited to items that will fit in a 6'x2'x2' oven. This allows us to do smaller bicycle / motorcycle frames, rims, engine components, calipers, etc....
- 12
Not only are powder coating materials non-toxic, the process is very environmentally friendly with virtually no waste, no volatile chemicals or solvents, and no harmful residues or cleanup needed. Powder coating is also approved for use with medical equipment and food-related uses.
- 13
Electrostatic spray coating typically results in thicknesses between 0.001" and 0.030" depending on the technique and material used. Fluidized bed coatings are generally 0.007" to 0.025" thick.

When possible, it is preferred to send us just the component that needs to be coated with all internals and accessory components removed; the part should be relatively clean to aid in the prepping process. We can always disassemble / reassemble the part but fees will be involved.
