CERAKOTE FAQs

- 01
CERAKOTE® is a ceramic based finish that can be applied to metals, plastics, polymers and wood.
The unique formulation used for CERAKOTE® ceramic coating enhances a number of physical performance properties including:
Abrasion and Wear Resistance
Corrosion Resistance
Chemical Resistance
Impact Resistance
Hardness
Each of these properties is rigorously tested to guarantee that CERAKOTE® products remain at the forefront of the ceramic coatings market.
CERAKOTE®ceramic coatings utilize state-of-the-art technology to out-perform any competitive coating in both laboratory settings and real world applications.
- 02
The greatest threat to firearms is rust. CERAKOTE® prevents rust exponentially better than any other firearms finish on the market. When subjected to salt chamber testing against other firearms finishes, CERAKOTE® outperformed every other finish by leaps and bounds. CERAKOTE® Elite Series lasted nearly 3000 hours in the chamber before it showed any signs of rust. By contrast, basic bluing lasted less than 24 hours.
- 03
As with all finishes, CERAKOTE® will wear over time if it is subjected to regular use. What sets CERAKOTE® apart from every other finish on the market is not that it is impervious to wear, it is that CERAKOTE® resist wear far better than its competitors; hundreds of times better to be more specific.

If the scratches on your gun are superficial (they only scratched the existing finish), then, yes. Part of the application process is to remove the existing finish by sandblasting the part at a specific PSI using specific blast media. In doing so, the existing finish is removed along with superficial scratches. If the scratches are deep and deform the metal, the then answer is probably, no. As stated above, the existing finish is removed in the process but scratches in the metal will remain. CERAKOTE® is exceptionally thin (.5mil -1.0mil for Elite Series) and will not "fill the voids".

Our turnaround time varies on the current workload in the shop. Most single color jobs can be completed in 1 to 2 weeks, more complicated camo patterns and theme jobs average around 2 to 4 weeks. Also keep in mind that you send a weapon completely disassembled (not field strip for cleaning, but completely disassembled) this can speed up the turn around time and save you the disassembly/reassembly charge.
- 06
We suggest maintaining the exterior as you would a blued firearm to keep them in the best condition possible (although the coatings will resist fingerprints, Stop Rusting etc Its best to take care of it to insure a fresh long lasting appearance) ! CERAKOTE® notes that all cleaners made for firearms are safe for the surface. If you have a firearm completely refinished in CERAKOTE®, a period of 200 to 300 rounds is typically required for break in with quality gun oil or grease. After this period you can run your weapon lightly lubricated!
- 07
Any part of a weapon not made of rubber can be coated. However, we do not coat critical components (i.e. sears, safeties, triggers, disconnectors, etc.), aftermarket match triggers, springs, inside of barrels or chambers. Some springs that are attached permanently to a gun must sometimes be coated. In these instances these spring will be coated, but we will not coat anything that will affect the function of your firearm.
- 08
Yes, in almost all cases your part will be taken down to bare metal and blasted with Aluminum Oxide to etch the item to ensure the proper profile is established for coating.
- 09
CERAKOTE will adhere to aluminum, steel, and stainless steel, Titanium, Scandium or 'pot metal'. Previously plated surfaces that are peeling or chipped like nickel, hard chrome must be stripped prior to coating.
- 10
Immediately after receiving the firearm from being coated.
- 11
CERAKOTE® coating can handle temperatures up to 1,800 degrees F. With "normal" shooting, your barrel will never get close to being that hot. If you are fortunate enough to own a transferable machine gun, or if you like to "blaze" with your semi-auto, your barrel temperature will rise to over 1,000 degrees F.
- 12
The application process consist of several steps, below is a very summarized overview of the process:
Completely disassemble the item to be coated
Properly degrease the item
Blast the part to establish the etched profile
Off-gas the item
Apply coating (flash cures will be used in phases if stencil work is needed)
Cure item
Reassemble item and ship to customer
- 13
CERAKOTE® is applied very thin, 1 to 2 mils, and will not affect the vast majority of firearms. Extra care needs to be taken with tight tolerance custom actions, or actions that have had the bolt bushed, but they can be coated.
- 14
Yes you can, the standard application process mentioned above would remove the old coating from the item. In some cases if the part has been anodized or plated it is not always necessary to completely remove the coating; however light etch blasting would still be needed. As an applicator though, you never know if the previous applicator properly prepped the surface, so if you can take the previous coating off it is usually best to do so.

Some colors are already readily available that will match OEM colors for many gun manufacturers; if there is not one available then we can simply mix colors as required to achieve the desired result.
